Lando Norris reveals Hungary pole key after denying Lewis Hamilton F1 history

Lando Norris has revealed the key to clinching a late Hungarian Grand Prix pole position, denying Lewis Hamilton a piece of Formula 1 history.

It looked as though the seven-time world champion was set to claim pole, which would have marked his 10th time starting from first in Hungary. No driver has ever claimed 10 pole positions at a single venue.

However, a late improvement at the death saw Norris clinch pole by 0.012s, marking another highly impressive result for the reigning world champion.

Norris has looked strong throughout the weekend and also topped third practice, with McLaren's upgrades appearing to be working well.

"Very happy to be back on top," said Norris. "A tough qualifying. These guys [Ferrari] were very quick. It's been tight the whole weekend but we seemed quick from the first laps we did and we brought a few upgrades.

"It's hard to know how much it helps in terms of lap time but it certainly helped today. Very happy to be back on top, especially at a track where you certainly want to be on pole."

Hungary has been the strongest Norris has looked since Miami earlier this season, with the Briton believing there was actually more lap time left in the locker.

While he felt more was on the table, he revealed to have pushed harder on his final lap in Q3 than on his first, which proved to be the key difference.

"I had confidence the whole of today," said Norris. "My laps in Q3 were not the best, even the one at the end, so pleasantly surprised to be on top.

"We have been doing a good job. The car has been feeling good, I've had good confidence. I pushed it more on the last lap - some paid off, some didn't but the main thing is we did it in the end.

"Very pleased for the team. A big thanks to them for working so hard and another big job tomorrow."
