Lando Norris makes solemn vow after remorseful McLaren admission

Lando Norris has acknowledged he "can't attempt" the overtaking move he tried on Oscar Piastri during the sprint at the Singapore Grand Prix, which cost McLaren valuable points in the close battle with Red Bull for third in the F1 constructors' championship.

Lando Norris has conceded he should not have attempted the ill-fated move on Oscar Piastri that cost McLaren eight points in the sprint at the Singapore Grand Prix, and has pledged to "do better" in future.

Norris tried to overtake his team-mate on the final lap of the one-third distance race at the Marina Bay Circuit when the pair were running fourth and fifth, good for nine points.

He lunged up the inside of Piastri into Turn 5, after the Australian had lost time on the exit of the previous proper corner, partially opening the door.

Still, it was an ambitious move, and Norris was in the blind spot of the sister car ahead, triggering contact between the rear right and left front tyres, spinning both round.

The reigning F1 drivers' champion recovered to eighth, taking the final point on offer, but Piastri was forced to park up, failing to take the chequered flag.

Norris was bullish in the pen afterwards, insisting the overtake "was on" and — at that stage — showing little sign of regret. He was combative in the pen when questioned as to whether it was a necessary risk, insisting the gap was large enough and that he "signed up to Formula 1 to race".

McLaren team principal Andrea Stella took a wholly different view, describing the incident as "unacceptable" and "serious" whilst sharing his disappointment over a needless MCL40-on-MCL40 collision which offered zero gain for the team.

Norris did acknowledge at the time that the team needed to review the situation, and soon apologised for his actions, which he has since reiterated.

He went on to have a strong grand prix under the lights of F1's original night race, finishing fourth, but Red Bull's return to form means just seven points are separating the teams in the fight for third in the constructors' championship.

After that 62-lap race, Norris was again asked about the collision with Piastri in the sprint.

"It's pretty straightforward," the 13-time grand prix winner told media, including RacingNews365. "I can't attempt what I did.

"I should never have attempted it in the first place, even if the move was on. I've simply got to think more of the team that I represent than myself.

"It was a mistake on my part, and I let down the team, so I've also apologised to all of them, and I owed them all an apology, and we'll do better next time."
