Lando Norris has detailed what caused him to hit the back of Oscar Piastri's car during the closing stages of the Canadian Grand Prix.
The McLaren driver crashed into his team-mate heading down the start/finish straight on lap 67 of 70 at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve as the pair battled over fourth position.
He lost his front wing in the initial contact with the MCL39 ahead, which sent his car into the wall, breaking the front left corner.
Whilst it pushed the British driver into retirement, thankfully for McLaren and Piastri, he was able to continue running.
His fourth place finish allowed him to grow his F1 drivers' championship advantage over Norris from 10 points to 22 after 10 rounds.
It was an incident that eerily mirrored when Lewis Hamilton collided with then McLaren team-mate Jenson Button at the same spot in Montreal in 2011.
Norris immediately took responsibility for the accident, apologising over team radio whilst saying it was his "fault" and that it was "stupid" from him.
When asked about what happened after the race, the 25-year-old revealed he mis-anticipated Piastri moving over to the right when, in reality, the Australian continued along the usual racing line.
"I just didn't expect to pass Oscar on the outside into Turn 1," he told media including RacingNews365.
"I should never have gone for it, I guess is my complete hindsight thing.
"I thought he was starting to drift a little bit to the right, so I thought I had a small opportunity to go to the left."
Norris acknowledged that it was an over-ambitious move with too much jeopardy, and shared his relief that Piastri escaped unscathed.
"But it was way too much risk, especially on my team-mate," the six-time grand prix winner said.
"So, happy nothing happened to him, and I paid the price for my mistake."
