Kimi Antonelli has one hand firmly on the F1 drivers' title after securing pole position for the United States Grand Prix.

Antonelli heads into the race at the Circuit of the Americas with a 102-point lead over Mercedes team-mate George Russell.

The 20-year-old Italian knows that victory on Sunday, coupled with Russell finishing ninth or lower, and Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton fourth of lower will see him crowned the sport's youngest world champion.

After dominating practice, with Leclerc quickest in the Friday sessions and Hamilton fastest in FP3, the Ferraris were expected to be the team to beat in qualifying, but their pace disappeared in Q3, in particular.

Antonelli held the upper hand at the end of the first run in the session with a lap of 1:34.035s, just under two tenths of a second ahead of Verstappen, with Hadjar just 0.036s adrift of his four-time F1 champion team-mate.

That lap proved to be good enough as none of the top three improved, securing Antonelli his first pole since Belgium.

Leclerc was the best of the Ferrari duo, with the Monégasque starting fourth, one place ahead of Hamilton, who at least managed to go marginally quicker on his second Q3 outing and gain a position.

Russell, meanwhile, starts sixth ahead of the McLarens of Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris.

Arvid Lindblad was ninth-quickest for Racing Bulls but will drop five places for a power unit component change, so he will start 14th.

Given that sanction and the realisation that Lawson would be unable to compete with the top four teams, Racing Bulls opted to pull the New Zealander from Q3. He will start ninth courtesy of team-mate Lindblad's penalty.

Bortoleto and Colapinto facing penalties

Pierre Gasly was 11th quickest in his Alpine, with the French driver dumped out of Q3 by just 0.022s by Lawson.

Despite being given a tow down the back straight between Turns 11 and 12 at one point by team-mate Gabriel Bortoleto, Audi's Nico Hulkenberg could only manage 12th on the timesheet.

Bortoleto was 13th, but the Brazilian has an 80-place grid penalty for a double power unit change this weekend and will start last on the grid.

He will be joined on the back row by Alpine's Franco Colapinto, who will serve a 10-place penalty for a PU component change of his own.

For only the second time this season, Fernando Alonso managed to reach Q2, and he will line up 13th courtesy of the Bortoleto and Colapinto penalties. Alongside him on the grid will be Haas' Oliver Bearman, who had his quickest lap deleted for track limits late on.

At the end of the opening 18-minute Q1 session, there were no surprises with the bottom four, in particular.

Williams duo Carlos Sainz and Alex Albon conceded coming into the weekend that COTA would be a hard circuit for their difficult-to-handle car, and so it proved again.

The duo qualified 19th and 20th, with Sainz finishing 0.197s ahead of Albon, who stated over the team radio after the session that he did not know what was going on. Sainz now has a qualifying record of 14-4 over Albon this season.

On home soil for the second time this year, the Cadillac pair of Sergio Perez and Valtteri Bottas were slowest, separated by just 0.090s. Perez has now out-qualified Bottas 10-8 this campaign.

Joining the quartet in exiting Q1 were Esteban Ocon in his Haas and the Aston Martin of Lance Stroll.
