Former F1 team owner Eddie Jordan has criticised the "nonsense" proposal to change the points system.

A proposal was submitted in 2024 for points to be awarded to 12th place, something which was unanimously voted against.

It was confirmed by the F1 Commission in July last year that the change would not take place, although Jordan still fears that eventually all positions will receive points.

The F1 points system has changed considerably in modern times, with only the top six having received points from 1960-2002.

It then changed to the top eight positions, whilst from 2010 the top 10 drivers have received points.

Jordan is not alone in being against the proposal, with former F1 driver David Coulthard having expressed a similar view on their Formula For Success podcast.

"Back in my day, you only got points in the top six, and today it is what it is, and you can keep changing things and it doesn't fundamentally change," Coulthard said.

"The most important thing is the winner. Who remembers who finished fourth? You might remember who finished second and third.

"So I think it's just a case of spreading the financial love, because we're looking at giving credit to, let's say, anyone outside the top 10. Jesus, top 10 in anything. It's not really anything to shout about, is it?"

'They'll soon give points to everyone'

Whilst the proposal was, ultimately, unsuccessful, with Cadillac F1 joining the grid in 2026 there will be an extra two cars battling for the top 10.

Jordan is adamant that points should not be awarded to drivers finishing outside the top 10, whilst the 76-year-old is actually against the current points system used.

"We absolutely 100% agree on this," stated Jordan. "For me, when you finish second, in some cases it's real joy, if you've never done it before or haven't done it on a regular basis.

"But in real terms, you're the first of the losers. There's the winner, and then second is the first of the losers, and then it's the second of the losers and the third losers. And that's how I see it.

"When you're competing in life and competing in every different aspect, there is compulsion amongst us, and that competitive urge is to win, and as long as you don't let it overrule your entire body and your whole meaning for life, and you take it as it is, then winning is so important. I absolutely am against points to 10th place."

A change which has been made to the points system for the 2025 season, is that no fastest lap point will be awarded.

However, what Jordan expects in the future, is that points will be awarded to every driver during a race, with him urging for an end to the points system changes.

Jordan continued: "I'm absolutely against this jiggling around with absolute nonsense and points, for Christ's sake, down to 12th place, they'll soon give points to everyone on the grid it's just nonsense."
