Who is James Vowles

James Patrick Vowles (born June 20, 1979) is a British motorsport engineer and team principal of the Williams Racing F1 team. Prior to joining Williams, he was director of motorsport strategy at the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One team. He was also responsible for the Brawn GP team's racing strategy, which was crucial in winning the 2009 title. He has more than 20 years of experience in Formula One and has been instrumental in nine constructors' championships, eight drivers' championships and more than 100 grand prix wins. He has worked under the guidance of team principals David Richards, Ross Brawn and Toto Wolff throughout his career.

James Vowles' early F1 career

Vowles began his career in Formula One with British American Racing in 2001 and remained with the team during its transition to Honda Racing F1, Brawn GP and Mercedes.

Brawn Vowles was the chief strategist of Brawn GP, a team that competed in the 2009 season. He was responsible for planning and implementing racing strategies for the team's drivers, Jenson Button and Rubens Barrichello. Vowles played a key role in Brawn GP's remarkable success, as the team won eight races and captured both the drivers' and constructors' championships in their debut season (and also their only F1 season). Vowles remained with the team when it was purchased by Mercedes at the end of 2009.

James Vowles Mercedes

James Vowles was one of the key figures behind Mercedes' unprecedented success in Formula One from 2014 to 2021, with the German team winning eight consecutive constructors' titles and seven drivers' titles with Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg. He was promoted from Chief Strategist to Motorsport Strategy Director in 2019 and was responsible for overseeing the racing strategy, performance analysis and simulation departments. He was also known for communicating via radio with drivers during races, often providing crucial information and guidance. One of the most famous radio moments is "Valtteri, it's James," the moment James Vowles told Valtteri Bottas to make way for Lewis Hamilton at the 2018 Russian Grand Prix.

In January 2023, Vowles announced he would leave Mercedes to become team principal at Williams Racing, succeeding Jost Capito, who stepped down in December 2022. In the 2025 season, James Vowles remains the F1 team principal of Williams Racing.
