Toto Wolff in motorsport

The polymathic executive was born in Vienna, Austria in 1972 and first became involved in the motorsport business in his late teens after watching a friend race at the Nurburgring. A few years later Wolff would go from the grandstands to the podium, winning his class at the famous German track’s 24 hour race in 1994 after launching his racing career in the Austrian Formula Ford Championship and the German Formula Ford Series.

Three years after his victory, Wolff swapped the pitlane for the boardroom, finding a new outlet in the investment world and setting up his first company, Marchfifteen, in 1998 during the 'dotcom boom'.

In the early 2000s, the Austrian began to merge his interests in business and racing, founding a driver management company with former F1 driver Mika Hakkinen in 2002 and playing a role in the initial public offering of German racing team HWA AG.

With a litany of successes behind him and enhanced financial firepower Wolff entered Formula 1 in 2009 with an investment in Williams, becoming the team’s executive director in 2012 and overseeing its first race win in eight years at the Spanish Grand Prix.

He had fully divested his original ownership interest in the team by 2016, but last year announced he had bought a small stake in Williams as the independent team upped its cooperation with Mercedes for 2021 to include the supply of gearbox and other components in addition to the power unit.

In 2013, Mercedes announced that Wolff would be joining the Silver Arrows as its new team director with a 30 per cent stake in the GP operation, a move that would come to form the most successful team in the sport for the last decade.

Subsequently, he was given responsibility for the German manufacturers’ overall motorsport operation and has since overseen a record eight straight constructors’ and drivers’ championships in Formula 1 with Lewis Hamilton at the wheel. At the end of 2023, Wolff signed a deal to stay with the manufacturer for a further three years.

Challenges for Mercedes in 2022

In 2022, Mercedes' dominance comes to an end and Red Bull Racing strikes back. They win the constructors' title in 2022. Mercedes finishes in third place, behind Ferrari. This season they have had many problems with the car. For example, drivers Lewis Hamilton and George Russell complained of porpoising, which seemed to be a recurring problem.

It seems that Mercedes have not yet regained their dominance during the 2023 season either after the first two races. After the first race in Bahrain, Wolff makes the statement that it was one of the worst days ever for racing and that they need to work very hard.

Married to Susie Wolff

Wolff has been married to Susie Wolff since 2011. She is a former professional racing driver and has been, among other things, a test driver for Williams. She has also been team boss for the Venturi Racing team in Formula E. She is currently Managing Director of the F1 Academy, a racing class specifically for women.

Son Jack Wolff

Susie and Wolff had their son Jack Wolff together in 2017. From a previous marriage, Toto Wolff has two more children.

Wolff may recently [April 2023] call himself a billionaire reports business magazine Forbes. The magazine also indicates that this makes Wolff one of the richest 2,500 people on earth. Lawrence Stroll, however, is only a lot above Wolff. His wealth is estimated at as much as $3.6 billion.
