Lando Norris

Is Lando Norris still in title contention after McLaren revival?

Lando Norris' season had been one of disappointment, until his strong win in Hungary.

Lando Norris's maiden victory of 2026 at the Hungaroring was a statement of intent from a defending world champion who has spent much of the season firefighting rather than racing.

It was also, in many ways, the most McLaren had resembled the dominant force that carried Norris to the title last year.

A pole-to-flag victory, built on the back of a significant upgrade package centred around a redesigned floor, was exactly the tonic Andrea Stella's team needed after a campaign blighted by Mercedes power unit electrical failures, a double DNS in China, a gearbox retirement in Canada and an engine failure in Monaco.

Those reliability nightmares, combined with a car that was aerodynamically off the pace, left Norris languishing with just 103 points heading into Budapest.

25 points later, the gap to championship leader Kimi Antonelli has narrowed to 91. There are at least 11 races remaining. That is 275 points still available. On pure mathematics, the title is very much alive.

McLaren's upgrade validated a new development direction, but 91 points is a mountain to climb against a Mercedes operation that has been ruthlessly consistent. Norris himself acknowledged the team must be "perfect from here on out for the whole year."
