Indy 500 winner gives verdict on Ricciardo making US switch

Daniel Ricciardo will not be racing in F1 next year, but has previously stated that he would entertain the idea of switching to a championship in the US. Indy 500 winner and former F1 driver Marcus Ericsson gives his verdict.

When Daniel Ricciardo was asked whether he would like to make an appearance in a US championship while away from being full-time driver in F1 in 2023, he gave a rather amusing (if not blunt) response . He confessed that ovals scare him and that racing in America was "more of a fantasy," but this years' Indy 500 winner and former F1 driver Marcus Ericsson gave his verdict on the possible switch. "I actually talked to him a bit in Austin when I was there. But he doesn't like ovals, he doesn't want to drive them," he told Swedish publication Expressen . When in the F1 paddock at Austin Ericsson was wearing his Indy 500 race winner ring, something that caught the eye of Ricciardo. "He was really impressed by this ring, so it is possibly the thing that can make him change his mind then!" added Ericsson. "But it doesn't feel like he's that keen on it right now, at least I got the feeling."

Ericsson: I know what its like when you don't have confidence in the car

Speaking about Ricciardo's recent struggles at McLaren, Ericsson recalled his own experience having raced for Caterham during his F1 debut year in 2014, then later Sauber between 2015 and 2018. He added: "I know for myself that when you don't gain confidence in a car, you easily lose confidence and then it becomes a vicious spiral that goes in the wrong direction. "He is a really good driver, he hasn't forgotten how to drive a car fast, but it's more about finding confidence in the car and having a car that suits your driving style and confidence in what you do."
