The FIA has approved plans for the Kyalami Circuit in South Africa to be restored to Grade 1 status, the condition required for F1 to race there.
It opens the door for work to start in pursuit of Formula 1 returning to the venue - and the African continent - for the first time in over 30 years.
Not since 1993 has there been a grand prix in Africa, when Kyalami hosted the second of two races in succession. Both were won by Williams; first by Nigel Mansell in 1992 and then by Alain Prost.
Both became F1 drivers' champions in those respective years. Prior to that, the circuit held the South African Grand Prix from 1967 to 1985.
In a press conference at the Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit, which is currently a FIA Grade 2 facility, track owner Toby Venter said: "This is a defining moment for South African motorsport.
"When we acquired Kyalami in 2014, we made a commitment to restore it, not just as a world-class venue, but as a beacon for motorsport across the African continent.
"The FIA's acceptance of our Grade 1 design is a major step forward in that journey."
The proposed changes to upgrade the circuit back to its prior certification will require no changes to the tracks layout. Instead, focus will be on bringing run-off areas, barrier systems, debris fencing and drainage up to standard.
Clive Bowen, founder and UK director of Apex Circuit Design, which has been heavily involved in the project, added: "This is a light-touch upgrade in engineering terms, but one that enhances the already excellent circuit standards to meet modern Grade 1 requirements."
Under the motorsport governing body's approval, Kyalami has three years to complete the necessary work.
"Today, we turn the page to a bold new chapter for Kyalami. We are ready for the return of Formula 1 to African soil," concluded Venter.
