Herbert handed new role after shock FIA exit

Johnny Herbert has not taken long to land a major new appointment with a renowned motorsport name.

Johnny Herbert has swiftly been announced in a new role just 24 hours after his exit from the FIA.

After 15 years working with the FIA as an F1 steward, motorsport's world governing body confirmed on Wednesday that the three-time grand prix winner was being released due to an 'incompatibility' with his media work.

Alongside his stewarding, Herbert prominently provided a series of interviews over the past year,  discussing headline issues in the sport, indicating a conflict of interests given his perceived impartiality with the FIA.

The 60-year-old has now joined Lola Cars as a global brand ambassador.

According to Lola, Herbert's expertise will be brought to bear on the back of its recent entry into Formula E, whilst he will also play a role, according to the team, "in furthering Lola’s ambition to strengthen the company as an industry leader in sustainable engineering and motorsport, strategically focusing on three areas of electrification, hydrogen and sustainable fuels and materials."

Additionally, the 1991 Le Mans 24 Hours winner will be involved in Lola's business partnerships and developments.

“It’s hugely exciting to be involved with an iconic and successful championship-winning marque like Lola," said Herbert.

"Lola has always been a big part of the motorsport world and, having grown up with Lolas around me in Formula Ford, sportscars and F1, joining the team for this next chapter feels like the perfect fit.

“I look forward to working with Lola and its partners, opening doors for the brand and helping contribute not only to the renewed success of such a storied name but to the sustainable future of top-tier motorsport.”

Lola Cars chairman Till Bechtolsheimer has described Herbert's appointment as "a real landmark moment" for him personally.

He added: “Having witnessed numerous displays of his talent and sportsmanship throughout his career, I am thrilled to get the opportunity to work alongside him.

"He is not only an ideal ambassador for everything that Lola stands for, but his wealth of experience will be a priceless resource for our present and future drivers."
