Red Bull motorsport advisor Helmut Marko outlined multiple surprises in the Canadian Grand Prix, and even made an admission about Max Verstappen's performance.

The Dutchman converted second on the grid to second on the podium, marking his first rostrum since winning in Imola.

Verstappen was forced to take an aggressive strategy do to the RB21 having suffered from poor tyre wear, before his pace improved considerably in the closing laps.

However, his pace was not enough to deny Russell victory, with even a post-race Red Bull protest having been rejected by the FIA.

Red Bull protested Russell's victory following multiple moments whilst behind the safety car in the final three laps, following McLaren's intra-team clash which saw Lando Norris retire.

Nevertheless, it was an improved performance overall by Verstappen compared to recent races, with Red Bull having looked competitive.

Mercedes had the quickest package and was, ultimately, too strong for the reigning world champion, who Marko pointed out pushed too hard in the opening laps.

"First of all, it was a great race and Mercedes provided a surprise," Marko told Sky DE. "They were also lightning fast in the race and had no tyre problems, at least not as expected.

"McLaren could not convince here. That was also a big surprise for us. Max pushed too hard at the beginning when he tried to overtake Russell.

"In the third stint he was competitive again. Then things went well. But again, Mercedes was very strong and the tyre wear was the same as everyone else's."
