Hamilton explains 'different perspective' of going from wins to midfield

After regularly battling for victories in years gone by, Lewis Hamilton is currently fighting in the midfield as Mercedes continue to struggle with their car in 2022. The seven-time World Champion admits that the change has been an "experience".

Lewis Hamilton has revealed how he feels about going from regularly winning F1 races to fighting further down the pack. The seven-time World Champion currently sits P6 in the Drivers' standings, with Mercedes continuing to struggle with issues on their car in 2022. Hamilton's best position was a third place in Bahrain, but since then his results have varied. His lowest finish was a P13 at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, whilst the Briton finished sixth in Miami, behind teammate George Russell in P5.

Hamilton admits that midfield battle is an "experience"

The team's prospects so far this season have been in stark contrast to years gone by, having previously achieved eight consecutive Constructors' Championships as well as winning back-to-back drivers' titles between 2014 and 2020. Six of these championships belong to Hamilton, and the 37-year-old was asked how it feels to go from winning races to battling in the midfield following the Miami Grand Prix. "It’s still racing, just a different perspective, a different point of view," Hamilton told media, including RacingNews365.com . "You always want to generally try and go forwards, but I will say it's quite difficult when you're not really going forwards. "It is what it is, but it’s an experience for sure."

No improvement for Mercedes, says Hamilton

Hamilton does not appear hopeful of getting back to winning ways just yet, as the driver feels that Mercedes have not made a great amount of progress since the beginning of the campaign. When questioned on whether there had been a step forward in Miami in terms of understanding the W13's issues more, Hamilton explained: "Unfortunately not. "We're the same speed as we were in the first race, so we've just got to keep trying. We haven't improved, unfortunately, in these five races, but I'm hopeful that, at some stage, we will. "We've just got to keep trying and keep working hard."
