Haas have offered an update on Mick Schumacher's condition after his high-speed crash during qualifying for the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix. Schumacher was tackling a flying lap in the final five minutes of the Q2 session at the Jeddah Corniche Circuit when he lost control of his VF-22 at Turn 12 and hit the concrete wall sideways at high speed. As several TV replays highlighted, the impact was so severe that the car split in two, with the gearbox breaking away when the car was lifted. With Schumacher not immediately clambering from the wreckage, the Medical Car and an ambulance were deployed to the scene.
Haas confirm Schumacher has no visible injuries
Haas initially announced they "had heard [Schumacher] is conscious", and have since offered a more detailed update on his condition. "[We] can confirm Mick appears physically fine – he has spoken to his mom [Corinna]," a Haas spokesperson said. "[Mick is] likely being taken to hospital [via airlift] for a scan as a precaution, but [we're] awaiting an FIA update on that."
FIA release their own statement
F1's governing body, the FIA, followed Haas' update with one of their own just moments later, explaining that Schumacher has been taken to a nearby hospital. "The FIA advises that an incident occurred during qualifying for the 2022 FIA Formula 1 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix today, 26/03/22, involving car #47, Mick Schumacher," the statement read. "Assessment at the Medical Centre revealed no injuries, and he has been transferred to King Fahad Armed Forces Hospital, Jeddah, for precautionary checks."
