Who is Guenther Steiner?

Guenther Steiner is a famous name within Formula One. He is best known as the former team boss of the Haas F1 team. He was born on April 7, 1965, in Merano, Italy, and grew up in a family closely associated with motorsports. At an early age, he became interested in motorsports and began working as a mechanic and engineer for various teams.

In 2002, Guenther Steiner made the move to Formula 1 and began working for Jaguar Racing as Managing Director. In 2005, he became technical director at Red Bull Racing. In the following years, Steiner held various positions within the motorsport world. Steiner has been team boss of the Haas F1 team since 2014.

Guenther Steiner Former team principal Haas F1

Steiner was appointed team boss of the Haas F1 team by Gene Haas and Joe Custer in 2014. However, his debut as team boss did not take place until 2016, at the Australian Grand Prix. Steiner and his team experienced the weekend with mixed feelings. Romain Grosjean finished sixth, giving Haas eight points in its debut race. It was the first time since Toyota (2002) that a team scored points during its debut. Those in Esteban Gutierrez's pit box were less happy. The Mexican experienced a hard crash after contact with Fernando Alonso. Haas scored 29 points in 2016, all of which were brought in by Romain Grosjean.

In 2017, Haas replaced Esteban Gutierrez with Kevin Magnussen. Both Grosjean and Magnussen scored points regularly that year. The same was true in 2018: that year, Haas finished fifth among constructors, narrowly behind the Renault team. Despite Steiner's regular altercations with his driver duo, Grosjean and Magnussen remained the drivers at Haas in 2019 and 2020 as well.

New driver duo in 2021

In 2021, Steiner appointed Mick Schumacher and Nikita Mazepin as drivers. Haas had an extremely disappointing season: the American formation finished dead last with zero points. In 2022, Steiner and co managed to turn the tide. Mazepin made way for old friend Magnussen, who together with Mick Schumacher managed to bring in the necessary points. A highlight for the American team was Kevin Magnussen's pole position during the F1 Sprint weekend in Brazil. Steiner will also be team boss of the Haas Formula One team in 2023. Kevin Magnussen and Nico Hülkenberg will represent the team as drivers.


Contract as team boss not extended at Haas F1

Unfortunately, we won't see Guenther Steiner (for the time being) in Formula 1 anymore. In early 2024, it was decided that his contract would not be extended as the team boss of Haas. Ayao Komatsu will succeed Steiner as the team boss of the American F1 team.

Special personality

In addition to his success as team boss, Guenther Steiner is also known for his direct and often humorous statements. He is incredibly popular among F1 fans. One of his most famous statements is, "If you're not crashing, you're not trying hard enough." This statement emphasises his determination and willingness to take risks to get the best results.

Steiner owes much of his fame to the Netflix series F1: Drive to Survive. The Haas team boss is put away in the show as a cult hero of the sport. Even in Drive to Survive, the Italian does not mince words. For example, he said, "Last year, I would have f*cked the whole paddock for some points," to which his press secretary said, "Sorry, did you use the f-word?" Steiner replied, "No, I said, 'Last year I would have hugged the whole paddock for some points.'"

Guenther Steiner lives in Mooresville, North Carolina (United States). He has both an Italian and American passport. He was born in Merano, South Tyrol (Italy).
