George Russell reveals personal priority in 'unique' Mercedes contract talks

George Russell has revealed that his personal priority in his conversations with Mercedes is his desire to "win", rather than being offered an increased salary. 

The Briton has faced a "unique" period of talks with the Silver Arrows over a new deal, caused by Mercedes boss Toto Wolff speaking to Max Verstappen. 

With Verstappen having committed his short-term future to Red Bull ahead of the Hungarian GP, attention has returned to Russell being handed a new contract. 

In Hungary, Russell insisted it was a matter of "when not if" he is given a new deal, having raced for the Brackley-based outfit for what is now a fourth season.

Despite Mercedes' W16 performing inconsistently, Russell is in the middle of an excellent campaign and has secured more podiums than anyone, except the McLaren duo. 

However, a crucial question remains over any possible new deal, what duration will be agreed between both parties.

Asked by select media including RacingNews365 whether he is expecting a one-year or multi-year deal, Russell replied: "I mean, it's something we need to think about. 

"What is in the interest of both parties, really, what do I want from this? As much as what do Mercedes want? 

"There has been, obviously, a bit of a unique situation we found ourselves in over these last six months. The fact is, from my side, I want to win. 

"That is the only thing I care about, more than money, more than number of days I lose sponsorship, more than anything, I want to win, and that, for me, is the most important thing about my future."
