Valtteri Bottas suffered a frightening high-speed crash in the Mexico City Grand Prix that brought the race to a halt.
On lap 44 of the 71-lap race at the Autodrómo Hermanos Rodríguez, and hurtling along the main straight into Turn 1, Bottas' Cadillac suffered a front-left suspension failure, with his car travelling at 320kph.
As the car immediately bottomed out, and as Bottas hit the brakes, it brought up a shower of sparks, leaving the Finn a passenger as the barrier loomed large.
A slight spin resulted in Bottas hitting the barrier with the rear-wing first. Clearly winded, it took Bottas a while before he finally gave the thumbs up to signal he was okay.
With the Cadillac embedded in the barrier, FIA race director Rui Marques had no choice but to red flag the race to allow repairs to the barrier to be carried.
At the time of the stoppage, Red Bull's Max Verstappen led from Ferrari's Charles Leclerc, followed by Kimi Antonelli in his Mercedes and the second SF-26 of Lewis Hamilton.
