The first practice session for the Las Vegas Grand Prix has been cancelled after just 10 minutes of track action.
The drivers headed out for the first time, but after nine minutes it was red flagged after Carlos Sainz stopped out on track.
Replays of the incident show him going down the straight at Turn 17, before he appeared to run over a loose drain cover which killed the engine.
The FIA confirmed: "We are currently looking at an issue with a drain cover, which is the reason for the current delay."
As a result the session was not resumed, with Alpine also confirming that Esteban Ocon sustained damage during the session due to a drain cover.
It is not the first time a session has been abandoned due to a similar problem, with FP1 during the 2019 Azerbaijan Grand Prix also getting cancelled after George Russell ran over a loose drain cover.
For the nine minutes the session did run, Charles Leclerc set the quickest time ahead of Nico Hulkenberg and Kevin Magnussen.
