Formula E announce calendar change and long-term extension

Formula E and the FIA have confirmed an update to the 2026/27 Formula E calendar, with the Monaco E-Prix moving forward by two weeks to 1 and 2 May 2027.

The event had originally been scheduled for 15 and 16 May but has been brought forward following an e-vote of the World Motor Sport Council.

The shift accommodates Monaco's wider events calendar and, crucially, removes a scheduling clash with the FIA World Endurance Championship's 6 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps, which falls on 15 May.

Alongside the date change, Formula E and the Automobile Club de Monaco (ACM) have extended their partnership, securing the Monaco E-Prix's place in the championship through 2031.

The deal represents a significant milestone for a race that began life as a biennial fixture but has since grown into an annual double-header on the full-length Circuit de Monaco.

Alberto Longo, Formula E's co-founder and chief championship officer, pointed to the Gen4 car's test run in Monaco earlier this year as a taste of what lies ahead.

"There is no stage in motorsport quite like the Circuit de Monaco, and we are thrilled to bring the next era of electric racing to the Principality," he said.

"David Coulthard's iconic Gen4 test-run at our last event set the ultimate precedent for what will be another showstopping weekend. With heightened speeds, even more overtaking, and intense wheel-to-wheel action, this jewel-in-the-crown double-header promises to be our best yet."

Coulthard, the two-time Monaco Grand Prix winner, demonstrated the Gen4 car on the streets of Monte Carlo in May, showcasing the machine's 600 kW power output and permanent all-wheel drive system ahead of its competitive debut later this year.

Record-breaking season takes shape

The calendar change means the Monaco double-header will now open the European leg of the season rather than following Berlin's Tempelhof rounds on 8 and 9 May.

That Berlin weekend remains unchanged, meaning just six days will separate the Monaco finale from the first Berlin race.

The record-breaking 21-race season, the longest in Formula E history, opens with a night-time double-header in Jeddah on 18 and 19 December before heading to the Americas with stops in Mexico City, Austin, Miami and São Paulo.

A single round in Sanya precedes the intensive European swing, which now runs Monaco, Berlin, Brands Hatch, Zandvoort and Madrid across eight weekends. The championship concludes in the Asia Pacific with double-headers in Shanghai and Tokyo in July.

The season will also mark the start of the GEN4 era, with the new car delivering 450 kW of race power, rising to 600 kW in Attack Mode, alongside permanent all-wheel drive and a top speed exceeding 335 km/h.

A new race format will accompany the car, pairing the traditional E-Prix with a shorter "E-Prix Unleashed" event at double-header weekends, designed to showcase the GEN4's unrestricted performance.
