Adrian Sutil has been arrested in an "international raid" for alleged fraud and embezzlement, according to German publication BILD.
Further details about the case have not yet been officially confirmed, and Sutil has not publicly commented on the allegations.
Sutil raced in F1 from 2007 to 2014, competing for Spyker, Force India and later Sauber. He collected a number of points finishes over that period and came close to several podiums, most notably at the 2009 Italian Grand Prix, in which he finished fourth.
This is not the first time Sutil has faced legal scrutiny. In 2011, he was involved in a widely publicised incident in a Shanghai nightclub, where he injured Lotus team executive Eric Lux with a champagne glass.
Sutil was later found guilty of grievous bodily harm, receiving an 18-month suspended sentence and a fine. The case temporarily forced him out of Formula 1 before he returned to the sport with Force India in 2013.
As the investigation develops, more information is expected to emerge about the circumstances surrounding the reported arrest and the claims against him.
