The Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile, more commonly known as the FIA, is the international sanctioning body for elite motorsport which governs the rules and regulations of Formula 1 and other top level racing competitions.

The organisation is headquartered in Paris, France and was founded in 1904 to represent the interests and concerns of domestic automobile clubs, many of which were involved in organising and running the earliest races.

Since then the FIA has been involved in the founding and drafting of regulations for elite competitions ranging from Formula 1, World Rally Championship, World Endurance Championship, Formula E and others.

The federation is led by former Ferrari team principal Jean Todt and is also involved in numerous activities in the automotive world aside from sanctioning races including promoting road safety and certifying land-speed record attempts.
