Ferrari return to iconic F1 livery for Italian GP

Ferrari has unveiled the special F1 livery it will run at the Italian Grand Prix this weekend, its second home race of the season.

The livery maintains the traditional red colour that has been used by Ferrari throughout its F1 history, but also incorporates white on the engine cover.

It is a callback to the Ferrari 312 T, which delivered Niki Lauda his first world title 50 years ago.

Lauda won his maiden championship at Monza on September 7 after finishing the grand prix in third place, while team-mate Clay Regazzoni secured victory.

The Austrian's title success ended an eleven-year drought for Ferrari and commenced a new era of success for the team.

Explaining how it has taken inspiration from the 312 T challenger, Ferrari has outlined that “the shade of red will match that of 50 years ago, the classic white longitudinal stripes will be present, as well as the drivers’ names written in cursive script”.

Changes have also been made to the driver numbers, which are now black on a white rectangular background.

The rear wing is a metallic silver colour, inspired by the aluminium components used in Lauda's time.

In his final years before his death in 2019, Lauda worked at the helm of the Mercedes F1 team and shared a strong relationship with Lewis Hamilton.

This weekend will mark Hamilton's first F1 race at Monza as part of the Ferrari squad.

The seven-time champion, as well as team-mate Charles Leclerc, will also be kitted out with race suits, shoes, and helmets specially designed in the style and colours of the era.
