Ferrari given shot in arm over crucial F1 2026 decision

There has been considerable divergence in development strategy across the top four teams during the 2026 F1 season, with the contrasting approaches set to come to a head when the campaign resumes in Zandvoort.

Ferrari has been aggressive with its upgrade path, delivering updates to the SF-26 on a consistent basis. The Scuderia insists it is a case of 'little and often' and that it has not blown through its cost cap prematurely, as some of the other leading teams have suggested — and hope.

On the face of it, the Italian team is porting multiple new parts to its car week in, week out. However, that does not mean it has spent more money or made more progress than its rivals with differing philosophies.

McLaren, at the other end of the spectrum, has developed the MCL40 in two major tranches, with the most recent coming at the Hungarian Grand Prix.

It delivered Lando Norris his first victory of the year, and the reigning constructors' champions will continue this method when the action resumes in the Netherlands, although it will also be providing some smaller updates, too.

Mercedes has deliberately geared its strategy towards the second half of the season, with Toto Wolff explaining this "weighted" approach will see a combination of larger and smaller updates down the stretch as the team and Kimi Antonelli look to defend their advantages in F1's two title fights.

Red Bull has offered more of a quasi approach thus far. With a couple of bigger developments supplemented with smaller changes on a more regular basis.

However, when recently asked which strategy has been the "best", F1 fans expressed a preference for Ferrari's method, deeming it to be the most effective way forward in the upgrade battle.

In a poll conducted by RacingNews365, over half of respondents voted for the Maranello-based team, putting it comfortably ahead of McLaren and Mercedes.
