Fernando Alonso has revealed that Aston Martin's "surprise" performance in the Hungarian Grand Prix is "concerning", as the team does not know why the car worked so well.
Aston Martin went from having both cars at the back of the grid in Spa-Francorchamps to having Alonso and Lance Stroll qualifying in fifth and sixth at the Hungaroring, marking a staggering U-turn.
The grid positions were achieved entirely on merit, with both drivers having looked comfortable and fast in Hungary, despite Alonso missing first practice due to back pain.
Alonso and Stroll converted a strong qualifying into fifth and seventh in the race, respectively, scoring the Silverstone-based outfit a crucial 16 points.
It has moved the British team into sixth in the constructors' standings, just 18 points adrift of Williams in fifth.
A new front wing was used by Aston Martin, with Alonso wanting the team to analyse whether it was the key to the remarkable performance improvement from the Belgian Grand Prix.
Discussing the performance of the car in Hungary, Alonso told select media including RacingNews365: "It is a surprise. Definitely, it is a surprise. So the good thing is that we were competitive and we were fast.
"The concerning thing is that we don't know why. So in a way, we need, this week at the factory to analyse exactly what are the differences between Spa and Hungry.
"What are the differences on the car as well, on the setup, on the aero devices that we were racing with. Obviously the main theme for us was the front wing that was new.
"If that front wing give us that much performance, that's very good news. But I think that has to be understood at the moment."
