Lando Norris has received a five-second time penalty for being judged at fault for causing the collision with Oscar Piastri on lap 67 of the Canadian Grand Prix.

The incident occurred along the start-finish straight with four laps remaining of the 70-lap event, with the duo clashing for the first time this season in earnest in their battle for the F1 drivers' championship.

On lap 66, Norris made a superb move on Piastri into the hairpin. Emerging out of it, the duo were involved in a drag race along the back straight, with Piastri holding sway into the final chicane.

Along the start-finish straight, Norris attacked again, going for a gap between Piastri and the wall, only to hit the left-rear tyre on the Australian's MCL39. The hit was enough to send Norris into the wall and also retirement. Piastri escaped unscathed.

Whilst Norris retired from the race, he was classified in the results, leading to the decision to hand the Briton a time penalty.

Following an investigation, a stewards' statement read: "The Stewards heard from the driver of Car 4 (Lando Norris), the driver of Car 81 (Oscar Piastri), team representatives and video and in-car video evidence. Car 4 was attempting to overtake Car 81 on the main straight.

"He attempted to move to the left of Car 81 but there was no space. The driver of Car 4 said that he thought there might be space but realised too late that there was not and he collided with Car 81. While Car 4 sustained damage and retired from the race (but was nonetheless classified in the results), Car 81 was not damaged.

"The Stewards determined that the driver of Car 4 was solely to blame for the collision. Because the collision had no immediate and obvious sporting consequence, we imposed a 5-second post-race time penalty on Car 4."
