F1 confirming that the Portuguese Grand Prix will return for the 2027 and 2028 seasons has reignited discussion around the sport’s calendar and the classic venues fans would like to see make a comeback.
A recent poll, conducted by RacingNews365 in response to the announcement, offers a clear picture of fan preferences.
South Africa’s Kyalami circuit emerged as the most popular option. Located near Johannesburg, Kyalami hosted 21 Formula 1 Grands Prix between 1967 and 1993.
The circuit has since undergone extensive redevelopment and currently holds FIA Grade 2 status, keeping it in regular conversation regarding a potential return, particularly as F1 has not returned to Africa in the three decades since.
European venues featured strongly elsewhere in the results. Germany’s Nürburgring, which hosted Formula 1 races in both its long Nordschleife era and later in its modern grand prix configuration, attracted significant support.
The original Hockenheim circuit also remained popular, remembered for its high-speed forest sections prior to its 2002 redesign. Germany last hosted a Formula 1 race in 2020.
Italy’s Imola also received notable backing. The circuit hosted the San Marino Grand Prix for many years and returned to the calendar in 2020, 2021 and 2022 under the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix name.
Malaysia’s Sepang International Circuit, designed by Hermann Tilke, remains well-regarded for its wide layout and overtaking opportunities after hosting Formula 1 from 1999 to 2017.
Turkey’s Istanbul Park, another Tilke-designed venue, is best known for its distinctive Turn 8 and hosted races as recently as 2020 and 2021.
France’s Paul Ricard, last used in 2022, also featured, while a smaller number of respondents favoured alternative locations.
