Pirelli has highlighted the biggest strategic risk for F1 teams and drivers during the Chinese Grand Prix, underlining how graining could play a significant role.
Graining occurs when tyre temperature is lower than the optimal working window, which causes chunks to rip off and stick to the surface itself, which lowers overall grip.
It is a considerable issue at the Shanghai International Circuit, with its long radius corners, which apply particular pressure to the front left.
Addressing the threat, outgoing Pirelli head of motorsport Mario Isola explained the situation in China.
"The tyres are working quite well," he told media, including RacingNews365. "Graining is not a surprise here; the front left is stressed, especially because you have Turn 1 that is very long, and if you initiate graining, it takes a bit of time to clean it, but it's part of the show.
"I heard some people are happy to have graining — at least there is a bit of degradation."
The 56-lap race is expected to be a one-stop affair, as is conventional. However, the difference between the prime medium compound to hard tyre approach and the soft-to-hard option is "very close", according to Isola.
When asked if some of the field may opt to start on the red-walled softs, he replied: "It is possible.
"It is possible because you can plan a more aggressive start, and then obviously an early pit stop maybe gives you a possibility to get out of traffic.
"If you want to use a slightly different strategy from what I believe is the majority, with medium-hard, soft-hard is — in terms of total race time — very close.
"So there is not really a disadvantage to start on the soft; you have to plan a different approach to the race."
Level playing field between soft and medium
Isola does not anticipate there to be a marked difference between the softs and the yellow-walled mediums when it comes to graining, providing a further element of strategic flexibility.
However, the temperature in Shanghai could be a factor in how much graining impacts the field as the grand prix progresses.
"Soft and medium, I'm expecting very similar in terms of graining, with obviously a little bit more on the soft, but not a big difference," he stated.
"While the harder seems to be more consistent, and I'm not expecting at this point a bigger track evolution with a clear reduction in graining.
"With this, the temperature will play a role in that."
