F1 drivers face major Sao Paulo GP headache after weather surprise

Rain was feared by many for race day in Interlagos, but it might just end up an entirely dry São Paulo Grand Prix.

Rain remains a genuine threat for the São Paulo Grand Prix, but a dry race is far from off the table. Should Interlagos stay dry, the grid faces an entirely different challenge when it comes to tyre strategy.

Qualifying for the race was held in treacherous conditions, a session that proved brutal for Gabriel Bortoleto and Rafael Câmara in particular. But the wet session has also left every driver with a markedly different tyre allocation heading into the race.

All 22 drivers go into Sunday with a healthy stock of fresh slick tyres. Those who reached Q3 carry only a minimal, almost negligible disadvantage, with four sets of fresh soft tyres compared to five for everyone eliminated earlier in qualifying. Every driver also has one fresh set of mediums and one fresh set of hards in hand.

Should the race switch to wet conditions, the picture around available sets shifts again, though not dramatically in anyone's favour.

Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton would head into any potential recovery drive with five fresh sets of intermediates at their disposal. By contrast, Lando Norris and George Russell have only two sets left, while Kimi Antonelli has three.

Should intermediates be needed, the key question becomes how quickly they degrade on a wet track. If that wear turns out to be significant, it could hand Verstappen and Hamilton a genuine advantage.

According to the forecast, the rain does not appear heavy enough to bring full wet tyres into play.

Cooler temperatures add extra unknown Brazil element

Even if it stays completely dry, there is still the question of how the tyres behave in conditions that are far cooler than those seen in practice.

Third practice, for example, was run in temperatures of 26 to 27 degrees. Sunday's forecast tops out at no more than 15 degrees, a difference that makes a considerable impact.

The tyres are likely to wear less overall, but other factors come into play, graining among them. Pirelli has indicated that a two-stop strategy will be the quickest route to the flag, while also outlining several alternatives. The question is whether the colder temperatures could upset that calculation.

Making a two-stop work requires drivers to push hard throughout each stint. That pushing causes the core temperature of the tyre to rise quickly, but the cold asphalt and air keep the outer rubber comparatively cool and stiff.

That sharp temperature difference causes problems in the corners: the softer inner layer flexes while the stiffer outer layer is dragged out of shape. The result is graining, a roughening of the tyre surface that brings a rapid loss of grip.

The opposite scenario carries its own risks. A one-stop strategy, or leaning on the harder compounds, brings the danger of over-managing the tyres to the point where both the core and the outer layer cool down and drop out of their working window.

That leaves the car sliding more than usual. Once cold tyres are asked to cope with lateral loads through the corners, the rubber fails to "bite" into the tarmac, and grip disappears rapidly.

A dry race would leave the field facing a grand prix full of unknowns over tyre behaviour and the ideal strategy. Whether Brazil ultimately serves up a dry race, a wet one, or something in between remains the biggest unknown of all heading into Sunday.
