Ex-Schumacher Ferrari F1 car fetches huge sum at auction

Michael Schumacher's championship-challenging car from 1998, the Ferrari F300, has sold at auction for $6,220,000.

Michael Schumacher's race-winning car from the 1998 season, the Ferrari F300, has sold at auction for $6,220,000. Listed as 'Chassis number 187', it is one of nine chassis created for the 1998 season and is noted as being an F300 chassis to have a 100 per cent win record. In the hands of Michael Schumacher, it was used in four victories, winning in the Canadian, French, and British Grands Prix, along with leading a memorable one-two victory at the Italian GP in Monza. Their 1998 campaign ultimately ended without a Drivers' or Constructors' Championship after a final-round defeat at the Japanese GP, with the top prizes going to Mika Hakkinen and McLaren.

Chassis 187 F300 car offered to public "for the first time"

The auction listing noted its 'unaltered' condition and its lack of previous owners from its original sale. "The Scuderia retained chassis 187 until September 1999, when it was sold directly, and privately, to the previous owner (along with a small package of spares) in the same race-used condition in which it remains today," the listing on RM Sotheby's read. "In their 23 years of custodianship, chassis 187 has been treated as a closely held and entirely preserved specimen of Formula 1 history. "It has remained shielded from the public during this time, has never been restored or altered from its as-raced condition, and is now publicly offered for sale (and viewing) for the first time in its history." Auction company RM Sotheby's has featured numerous F1 and motorsport lots in recent years. In February this year, Fernando Alonso's Renault R24 from the final three races of the 2004 season sold for €258,125. In July 2021, an auction for a McLaren MP4-25 , which took Lewis Hamilton to the 2010 Turkish GP win, sold for £4,730,000.
