Born in Montona, Italy (now Croatia), Mario Andretti and his family left their home and lived in a refugee camp before moving to the USA in 1955. It’s there that Andretti got into motosports, racing at the local track before making his debut in IndyCar in 1964. He won his first race, championship and Rookie of the Year Honours in 1965, and repeated as champion in 1966. He also took his first pole at the Indianapolis 500, winning the race in 1969.

Although he competed in America, Andretti never hid his desire to race in Formula 1. That opportunity came in 1968 with Lotus. He drove sporadically in the series for the next four years with Lotus, March and Ferrari. His first F1 came on his Ferrari debut at the 1971 South African Grand Prix, while also winning various endurance races with co-driver Jacky Ickx. Andretti eventually joined Lotus and won the 1978 world championship. However there were no celebrations when he clinched at the Italian Grand Prix, as teammate Ronnie Peterson lost his life in an accident at the event.

Andretti failed to win another F1 race after that season, but he returned to America and continued to add to his list of achievements, winning the 1984 CART championship with Newman/Haas Racing.

He is one of three drivers to have won races in F1, IndyCar, World Sportscar Championship and NASCAR, alongside Dan Gurney and Juan Pablo Montoya. Andrett is also the only driver to win the Indianapolis 500, Daytona 500 and the F1 world title
