Domenicali casts doubt on podiums for F1 sprint races

With news that Formula 1 may test out sprint races in Canada, Italy and Brazil in 2021, one thing they may not include is the traditional podium celebration.

Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali has revealed that the series is considering forgoing podium celebrations after sprint races should the plan get the green light. Plasn are already in place to test out the new event at select races this year, which would see them introduced at the Canadian, Italian and Brazilian Grands Prix. However one idea being discussed is eliminating podium celebrations following the race on Saturday in order to keep the shine on the main event on Sunday. “We are defining the sprint races now and we will present the programme before the Bahrain Grand Prix,” Domenicali told Autosport. “We have to make sure that there is a difference between the iconic celebration of the race – which is the iconic moment at the end of the event on Sunday afternoon. “That's the peak of the event and that has to be kept separate from the other moments. So the most important celebration will still be Sunday afternoon, and not Saturday.”
