The Formula 1 points system has become a much-debated topic, but does it need changing?

A proposal was submitted last year for points to be awarded to the top 12 drivers, instead of the top 10. That proposal was unanimously rejected, as announced last July by the F1 Commission.

Former F1 team owner Eddie Jordan believes the proposal was "nonsense", but fears all positions will eventually be awarded points.

Jordan's view is shared by former F1 driver David Coulthard, whose career in the pinnacle of motorsport started when just the top six drivers received points.

That system was run from 1960-2002, before the top eight were awarded points in each race from 2003-2009.

Since 2010, the current points system has been used. One change for next season is the fastest lap bonus point has been axed.

Coulthard and Jordan argue that when less positions receive points, the drivers and teams push harder, rather than settle for a P10.
