Defiant Esteban Ocon fights for F1 future: 'I'm one of the best out there'

Esteban Ocon has staunchly defended his place in F1, insisting he is "one of the best out there" after his future was thrown into serious doubt heading into 2027.

Ocon is understood to have already been informed he will not continue with Haas next season, with the American outfit actively evaluating alternatives, including Ferrari junior Rafael Camara, who has emerged as the frontrunner to partner Oliver Bearman.

The French driver used the Azerbaijan Grand Prix weekend to confirm his situation publicly, revealing he holds no contract for next year.

"At the moment, I'm definitely a free agent for next year," Ocon said in the Baku paddock during his Wednesday media session.

"There are things in discussion that are out of my control. There are certain topics that are out of my control. So, I will keep pushing until the end of the year and see how it goes."

Asked whether staying with Haas remains a possibility, the 30-year-old simply responded: "Let's see."

Ocon 'not afraid' to make his case

Haas team principal Ayao Komatsu played down suggestions that a call had already been made, maintaining that an option date on Ocon had simply passed without resolution.

"Every driver has a clause at a certain point in the year to decide on an option. It just means that we haven't decided on that option yet, but that was quite a long time ago, so his situation hasn't really changed," Komatsu said. "We're still trying to finalise what we're going to do for next year."

Ocon's campaign alongside Bearman has been a difficult one, with the Briton having routinely got the better of his more experienced team-mate and established the upper hand.

But an eighth-place finish in Baku, one place ahead of Bearman, gave Ocon fresh ammunition to argue his case.

"I can say, 'I deserve that', not all the rest of the shit," Ocon told media, including RacingNews365, when it was put to him that the result was redemption during a tough spell.

When he was asked if the result proved he can deliver when the VF-26 performs, he replied, "Yeah" before launching an impassioned plea for his place in F1.

"I've raced with everyone out there, and I've always been on par," Ocon stated. "I've won in every championship that I've raced in. I won races in Formula Renault. I won championships in go-karts. I won Formula 3. I won GP3.

"I was racing in the top 10 in DTM for half the season. I've won in Formula 1. I can do it.

"I'm one of the best out there, and I'm not afraid to say it."
