Daniel Ricciardo left furious after Max Verstappen clash - On This Day

The 2017 Hungarian Grand Prix, held on this day nine years ago, produced a Ferrari one-two for Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen.

However, the race will be remembered just as vividly for the contrasting fortunes of the teams behind them.

At Red Bull, the afternoon was a disaster before it had really begun. On the opening lap at Turn 2, Max Verstappen locked his brakes and clattered into the side of team-mate Daniel Ricciardo, breaking the Australian's radiator and ending his race on the spot. 

The stewards handed Verstappen a 10-second time penalty, though he still salvaged fifth. Ricciardo, meanwhile, was left with nothing.

His fury was immediate and unfiltered. "That was amateur, to say the least," Ricciardo said after the race. 

On team radio, the moment he learned who had hit him, his response was just as colourful. In the media pen he expanded on his frustration: "I don't think he likes it when a teammate gets in front. 

“You've got the whole race to try and repair the mistake but the pass was never on. It wasn't even a pass; it was a very poor mistake."

Verstappen later apologised privately, and Ricciardo acknowledged as much, but the damage, both to his car and his mood, was done. 

"He apologised and said it was his mistake, his misjudgement, not intentional," Ricciardo confirmed. "Obviously it doesn't change my race or anything."

The contrast with what unfolded at Mercedes could hardly have been sharper. Running third and fourth behind the two Ferraris, the team swapped Lewis Hamilton ahead of Valtteri Bottas to give him a crack at Raikkonen, on the condition the positions would be reversed if the attack failed.

Hamilton could not find a way past, and on the final lap, true to his word, he slowed and waved Bottas back into third.

"It's tough in the championship but I'm a man of my word," Hamilton said. "I did say that if I can't overtake them I would let him back through."
