Charles Leclerc swings 'right hook' claim after huge George Russell defeat

Charles Leclerc has admitted he was left reeling after qualifying for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, saying his Ferrari felt "hooked up" but not enough to land a blow on pole-sitter George Russell.

The Monegasque driver ended Friday's session at the Baku City Circuit over eight tenths of a second adrift of the Mercedes driver, who took pole with a lap of 1:42.526.

Leclerc's best effort of 1:43.363 was enough for second on the grid, ahead of Oscar Piastri's McLaren by just 0.001s, but nowhere near troubling Russell for top spot.

Asked about his lap in Q3, the nine-time grand prix winner did not shy away from the scale of the deficit.

"Well, I felt hooked up as well, but maybe not to the right hook when I see the gap with George," Leclerc told media, including RacingNews365. "It's quite a significant gap."

The 28-year-old said Ferrari's car had actually felt stronger than at any other point across the weekend, even if that improvement was not enough to close the gap to Mercedes.

"So, yes, the car felt better than what it felt for the rest of the weekend," he added. "We've had our struggles this weekend, and we were definitely not as competitive."

Tyre window troubles

Leclerc pointed to the tricky Baku tyre window as a shared headache across the field, name-checking McLaren as fellow strugglers through practice.

"But... I think it's very difficult to get these tyres in the right window, and particularly this weekend," he said. "I think probably McLaren and ourselves were a bit in the same boat, where we were really struggling in free practice."

He contended the inconsistency had carried into the sessions building up to qualifying, even if Friday afternoon brought some improvement.

"Some laps were good, but never really consistently there," Leclerc pointed out. "And in qualifying I felt like we did a better job in that. But, yeah, it's all relative, and eight tenths and a half is a lot."

Leclerc identified a specific area where Russell had gained the upper hand, one that ran contrary to Ferrari's usual pattern of losses, concluding: "So, there are plenty of things that we should look at and try to improve, particularly because our weakness normally is straight-line speed, but Sector 2 is also where George made the difference."
