Carlos Sainz will be investigated following the conclusion of first practice ahead of this weekend's Belgian Grand Prix.
The Spaniard crossed the pit entry line at the final corner at Spa-Francorchamps. However, he did not enter the pit lane.
Bizarrely, Sainz crossed the pit entry line and passed the bollard before making a sharp left-hand turn across the run-off area and rejoining the circuit.
He quickly informed the team over the radio that his gearbox had made him do it, although he will have to explain the incident to the Belgian Grand Prix stewards.
