Franco Colapinto locked up and came streaming down the inside of Turn 1 at the safety car restart in Baku, wiping out Alpine team-mate Pierre Gasly and Lando Norris.
The error ended the trio's Azerbaijan Grand Prix after just 35 laps, bringing the safety car back out almost immediately at the Baku City Circuit. Norris was only that far down the order following an earlier mistake at Turn 1.
It was a particularly costly crash, with good points for Team Enstone forfeited needlessly.
Gasly and Colapinto were set to reduce the deficit to Racing Bulls in the fight for fifth in the constructors' championship to just four points, but the gap could now be extended.
The only saving grace for Alpine is that, behind the chaos, the two Racing Bulls also made contact, which understandably caught the ire of Liam Lawson upon his return to the Faenza-based squad after deputising at Red Bull.
