FIA release F1 cost cap findings with two teams not in compliance

The FIA has finally released the 2021 cost cap findings, with Red Bull breaching the limit and Aston Martin in a procedural breach.

The Red Bull Formula 1 team has been found to have breached the 2021 cost regulations by the FIA, while Aston Martin have committed a procedural breach. With a limit of $145 million to spend, all 10 teams submitted their accounts to the FIA for scrutiny to ensure compliance with the new regulations. However, Red Bull have been found to have committed a Minor Overspend Breach offence, as well as procedural ones, with Aston Martin also at fault procedurally but remained below the prescribed limit.

Nine teams in compliance

Upon completing its review, the FIA found that nine teams, with the exception of Red Bull and including Aston Martin were within the limits set by the cost cap. The statement from the FIA does not suggest by how much Red Bull overspent by in the 2021 season - although a minor overspend breach is within 5% of the $145 million limit. The Certificates of Compliance have been awarded to seven of the teams - Mercedes, Ferrari, Alpine, McLaren, AlphaTauri, Haas and Alfa Romeo with Williams' earlier 2022 procedural breach mentioned. On that occasion, the team were fined for missing a paperwork submission date by one day but were found to be within the cost cap limit. In the statement, the FIA thanked the teams for "their full support in providing the required information to assess their financial situation during this first year of the Financial Regulations [in a] intensive and thorough process," and that all teams "acted at all times in a spirit of good faith." Potential penalties for Red Bull in the overspend range from ultimate disqualification from the 2021 championship although this is highly unlikely. More likely is a fine, reduction in development time and a reduction in the next cost cap to the margin of the overspend. Aston Martin is also set for a penalty - with both set to be revealed once the "appropriate course of action" has been determined.
