Bottas: I can go as long as I want in the first stint

The Mercedes driver feels it's his race to lose after he put his car on pole position for Sunday's Portuguese GP.

Pole sitter Valtteri Bottas reckons Mercedes' strategy to start on the medium tyres will give him a strong chance of winning the Portuguese GP. Bottas will start from first after pipping teammate Lewis Hamilton to pole position by 0.007 seconds in Portimao. "The whole weekend has been a so-so feeling with soft tyres, we've been feeling better with the medium," said Bottas after qualifying. "Tomorrow starting with the medium tyre, I think it's good. It opens up opportunities that we can go pretty much as long as we want in the first stint." Bottas has struggled with his one lap pace this year so was delighted to turn things around with his first pole position of 2021. "It's a good feeling to be on pole position," added Bottas. "It feels like it's been been a while so it was nice to get a good qualifying. "Getting the tyres to work, it's been the weak point for me in the in the first two races. We've been working hard and it's nice to see it's paying off and it puts me in a good position for tomorrow."
