Aston Martin's weekend from hell in Montréal continued just as qualifying for the Canadian Grand Prix was about to start.

It has already been a torrid season for the time, but since arriving in Montréal, little has gone right for the team.

In sprint qualifying on Friday, Alonso crashed in the opening 12-minute session, and although the two-time F1 champion set a time good enough to reach SQ2, he was unable to take part due to the damage sustained.

On the grid for the sprint, Lance Stroll was due to start 17th, but sustained a suspension issue with his car which led to him being wheeled off and needing to start from the pit lane.

Alonso was then the only driver who retired during the sprint due to a technical issue. Stroll was at least 16th of the 21 who finished.

Ahead of grand qualifying, two incidents unfolded in a matter of seconds as first Alonso was released into the pit-lane path of the Alpine of Franco Colapinto. The unsafe release will be investigated after qualifying.

Similarly, the stewards will also investigate Aston Martin for releasing Stroll's car in an unsafe condition, as a wheel faring sprang loose from the car as he entered the pit lane.

To rub salt into the wounds, neither Alonso nor Stroll made it out of Q1, with the duo to start 19th and 21st.
