Biography of Arie Luyendyk

Arie Luyendyk was born on September 21, 1953, in Sommelsdijk, Netherlands. He started racing at a young age and became Formula Super Vee European champion in 1977. After winning this title, Luyendyk moved on to Formula 3, where he raced for Racing Team Holland. Dutch racing drivers Jan Lammers and Huub Rothengatter were his teammates at this team.

Arie Luyendyk IndyCar

In 1985, the Dutchman moved to the United States to race in the IndyCar and CART championships. Luyendyk quickly made a name for himself and received the Rookie of the Year title in 1985. He also won this award during the 1985 Indy500 race. Throughout his career, he won several races.

Arie Luyendyk Indy500

During his career in America, Luyendyk became one of the most successful Dutch racers of all time. This is largely due to his two wins at the prestigious Indianapolis 500. He accomplished this feat in both 1990 and 1997. In addition, he qualified on pole position three times for the legendary event. In 1993, 1997, and 1999, he started the Indy500 from first place on the grid. After 1999, Luyendyk temporarily retired from IndyCar, but returned to the starting grid for the Indy500 in 2001 and 2002. He had planned to do the same in 2003, but a serious crash during a free practice session for the event forced Luyendyk to withdraw.

Arie Luyendyk

The racer's name was originally spelled Arie 'Luyendijk,' but the Dutchman changed it to Luyendyk when he moved to the United States. This was because the rewritten version of his last name would be easier for Americans to pronounce.

Arie Luyendyk Jr.

Arie Luyendyk's son - Arie Luyendyk Jr. - is also a racer. He started karting in 1982 and, like father Arie, made it to the IndyCar Series. In 2006, he participated in the Indy500.

After racing

After nearly two decades in the IndyCar Series, Luyendyk had success in other motorsport championships. He won the 24 Hours of Daytona and the 12 Hours of Sebring. Later, he served as a mentor to his son and Robert Doornbos when they made their debut in American racing. He currently fulfills this role again as he guides Rinus 'VeeKay' van Kalmthout during his IndyCar Series adventure.

Arie Luyendyk Corner

In 2001, Circuit Zandvoort changed the name of its final corner. "Bos Uit" was replaced by "Arie Luyendyk Bocht" in honor of the Dutch racer's achievements. Bocht is the Dutch word for corner.

Despite a successful career in the United States, Luyendyk was close to a Formula 1 seat three times(!), he told RacingNews365.

Arie and Lauren Luyendyk

In 2019, son Arie Luyendyk Jr. participated in the TV program The Bachelor. In the show, Luyendyk Jr. met Lauren Burnham, whom he married. As of 2023, the couple is still together and has three children. Father Luyendyk and mother Mieke Luyendyk are also seen multiple times on the reality show.
