American F1 hopeful issues update on future drive

Colton Herta was once tipped to join the F1 grid but was denied an FIA exemption from the Super Licence rule. He's now being tipped as a favourite for Andretti drive should the American outfit form a team.

Colton Herta has issued an update on his quest to secure a Formula 1 drive in the future.

During the 2022 campaign, the IndyCar star was being tipped for a move to AlphaTauri for the following campaign.

Red Bull unsuccessfully sought an FIA Super Licence exemption for the American and opted to sign Nyck de Vries instead.

Herta's best bet of a Formula 1 drive now appears to lie with Michael Andretti and the former racer's plan to form his own team.

Andretti passed the FIA's first phase and it is now in discussions with F1's commercial rights holder.

Herta currently races for Andretti's IndyCar squad and is a strong favourite for a drive in F1 should the bid be successful.

While Herta still has an eye on making the move to F1 in the near future, the 23-year-old asserted that his primary focus is currently on IndyCar.

“I think it’s very time-sensitive. I’m probably at the highest age that I could probably go over there with a team, maybe, besides Andretti,” he said.

“I don’t have anything to report on their side of things. I think their goal is still to get a Formula 1 team, and they’re still trying to.

“If that happens we’ll have to see what timeline that is and how old I’ll be and where I’m at in my life at that point.

“So for me, really, just the main focus right now is IndyCar, and we’ll see where it goes.”
