Alonso vows ‘extra risk’ if fighting for F1 win again

Fernando Alonso suggested he will not hold back if he is again fighting for a Grand Prix victory.

Fernando Alonso has warned his rivals that he will take "extra risk" when fighting for a Formula 1 race win, should an opportunity present itself this year. Last time out at the Dutch Grand Prix, Alonso crossed the line in second place to take his seventh podium of the year. A late-race restart following a red flag stoppage presented the two-time World Champion with a chance to contest for the victory against Max Verstappen, but the Aston Martin driver settled for second place as Red Bull’s Max Verstappen went on to take his 11th win of the year. Alonso has not won a Grand Prix since May 2013 in Spain during his Ferrari days, but vowed to put it all on the line if a 33rd career win was on the line.

Alonso's warning

"There are a couple of weekends where we seem a little bit closer," Alonso told media including RacingNews365. “I felt the three-second places, we were close to the win. We are fighting against an outstanding Max [Verstappen] and Red Bull. "[They are] unbreakable, [but] we are getting close sometimes. "We just need that extra step in terms of performance, in terms of luck, and in terms of pit stops at the right time or whatever. "In the remaining races, hopefully, we can be in that position to fight again and have a chance to be side-by-side with Max and at that point, maybe take some extra risk."
