Allan McNish has been the racing director of the Audi F1 team since April 2026, when he took over from former team principal Jonathan Wheatley. He reports to CEO and team principal Mattia Binotto.

Allan McNish was born on 29 December 1969 in Dumfries, Scotland. He is a former racing driver and has held various managerial positions in motorsport since retiring from racing.

He turned professional in 1988, winning the British Formula Vauxhall Lotus Championship before moving into British Formula 3 and Formula 3000. McNish subsequently became a Formula 1 test driver for McLaren and Benetton, while also beginning a successful career in sports car racing. He won the 24 Hours of Le Mans with Porsche in 1998 and the American Le Mans Series with Audi in 2000.

McNish finally made his Formula 1 race debut with Toyota in 2002, but returned to endurance racing after a single season. He went on to become one of Audi’s leading sportscar drivers, winning the 24 Hours of Le Mans twice more in 2008 and 2013, as well as three American Le Mans Series titles and the FIA World Endurance Championship in 2013. He retired from full-time racing at the end of 2013.

Following his retirement, McNish moved into management with Audi, serving in several senior motorsport roles before becoming team principal of Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler in Formula E. He later became director of Audi’s driver development programme and was closely involved in the manufacturer’s Formula 1 project. In 2026, McNish was appointed racing director of the Audi F1 Team, overseeing its sporting and trackside operations.
