Alex Albon's decision to sign a new multi-year contract is a "huge vote of confidence" in the Williams project, believes boss James Vowles.

It was announced on Wednesday morning that Albon, who had been linked with seats at Red Bull or Mercedes earlier this year, will be staying at Williams having signed a new long-term deal, although no specific length was announced.

Albon has been a key instrument in Williams' climb from the back of the field under Vowles, scoring 27 of its 28 points in 2023 as it finished seventh in the Constructors', in its best showing since the 2017 season.

Vowles has been trying to engineer a major culture shift at Williams since his appointment, and believes Albon's decision is a major validation.

"He has exceptional talent, technical input and dedication to the cause," Vowles explained.

"This is a huge vote of confidence in Williams and the journey back to competitiveness that we are on.

Vowles also added that he felt Albon's decision to stay at the team he joined in 2022 was another part of the puzzle Williams have needed to put in place as it continues its rebuild under the former Mercedes strategy chief.

"We are delighted to secure Alex's long-term future with Williams Racing," he said.

"Since joining, Alex has consistently demonstrated his ability to perform under pressure, and signing him for the long-term is a big piece of the puzzle of moving us up the grid."
