For leader Nasser Al-Attiyah of Dacia, the task was clear during the final stage of the Dakar Rally: not to get into trouble and throw away his 16-minute lead over Nani Roma.
On the 105-kilometre final stage earlier in the day, bike racer Ricky Brabec threw away overall victory due to a navigational error, with Al-Attiyah losing eight minutes of his lead between kilometres 21 and 43.
However, after the wobble, the Qaterean racer managed to cross the line 9m:42s clear of Ford's Roma to claim his sixth overall success in the Dakar Rally.
It closes the gap to record eight-time winner Stephane Peterhansel to just two in cars, with six further wins in motorcycles.
Al-Attiyah did not win the final stage, meaning he did not break the record for most stage wins on the Dakar, with himself, Peterhansel and Ari Vatanen all tied on 50 stage wins.
Roma and Mattias Ekstrom claimed the remaining podium spots, Ekstrom winning the final stage.
Nine-time world rally champion Sebastian Loeb was fourth overall, just ahead of Carlos Sainz, the four-time Dakar winner and two-time world rally champion.
