Rafael Camara stormed to pole position for the F2 feature race at the Monaco Grand Prix, beating the best time from Group B, set by Nikola Tsolov.
Qualifying around the streets of Monte Carlo sees the Formula 2 field split into two segments to avoid traffic and incidents: Groups A and B.
The quickest time overall takes pole, and the rest of that driver's group will start the Sunday race from the odd-numbered side of the grid.
By extension, the fastest driver in the session that did not secure the best outright lap time completes the front row, with those behind that driver taking the rest of the even-numbered grid slots.
Group A saw Camara secure the top time, besting Alex Dunne and Dino Beganovic in the Principality.
John Bennett hit the wall with four minutes of the session remaining, locking up at the first corner and going straight on, bringing out the red flag.
When the session resumed, championship contender Camara stunned the paddock with an outrageous effort, having previously bent the steering arm on his Invicta, which was repaired during the stoppage.
It had shades of Ollie Bearman's sublime pole position with a broken steering column in Baku a few years ago.

Group B
Group B was topped by Tsolov from Martinius Stenshorne and Kush Maini, although the latter driver may yet face a penalty.
A couple of minutes into the session, Maini triggered a red flag with a clumsy move on Laurens van Hoepen at the Nouvelle Chicane.
The ART driver put his car down the inside of the Dutch driver, spinning him around. When the Trident went to get going, it became beached on the inside kerb and stalled.

Overall results
Because the best time from Group A was quicker than the fastest time from Group B, Camara takes pole position.
Team-mate Joshua Dürksen finished fifth in the second segment, so he will therefore start Saturday's sprint race from reverse-grid pole.
