George Russell disrupted Kimi Antonelli's clean sweep of free practice at the Austrian Grand Prix in FP3, getting the better of his Mercedes team-mate and Lewis Hamilton at the Red Bull Ring.
Lando Norris, Oscar Piastri and Max Verstappen rounded out the top six in Spielberg, which was separated by just two-and-a-half tenths of a second.
Charles Leclerc continued to endure his difficult spell, experiencing a messy end to the third free practice session, which left him another tenth adrift of the Dutchman in seventh after the final qualifying simulation runs.
The final hour of preparation for the weekend began in a characteristically slow fashion, with Sergio Perez conducting what was essentially a private test for Cadillac over the opening 10 minutes, gaining some much-needed time on circuit after a heavily disrupted Friday.
The track started to get busy 15 minutes into the session, with Norris setting the first remotely representative lap time: a 1:07.832.
However, that was soon bettered by Antonelli, who would remain unchallenged at the head of the timing board until the dying moments.
Russell struggled to find comfort with the front of his car, leading to front suspension changes on his W17 as a last roll of the dice to close the deficit to his team-mate ahead of qualifying.
It helped the British driver overturn the gap, despite initially being unable to improve. His final run, on used soft tyres in the final minutes, was the first in which he adopted Antonelli's approach of going through the pit lane on cooldown laps, which appeared to be the difference maker.
With the F1 drivers' championship leader unable to go quicker on his last push laps, Russell headed the session by 38 milliseconds.
