Alex Dunne won his first race of the F2 season in the first feature event of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix weekend, which was time-limited and ran to just 23 laps. However, full points were awarded.
Martinius Stenshorne and Dino Beganovic rounded out the podium places at the Baku City Circuit.
Rafael Camara seized control of the drivers' championship by finishing fourth ahead of Noel Leon, with an overtake right on the line to move a point clear of Nikola Tsolov.
Disaster struck Sebastian Montoya before the start. The Prema driver spun on his way to the grid, losing drive and rendering him unable to take the start from seventh on the grid.
Tsolov did start, but endured a miserable race, retiring on Lap 12 after a multi-car crash upon the safety car restart, temporarily halting the race with a red flag.
Prior to that, a host of the alternate strategy runners, who started on the softer compound, including the Red Bull junior, came in on Lap 7 of the scheduled 29.
Things did not go well for the then-championship leader, who endured a slow pit stop, falling behind those around him. To add insult to injury, he was also noted for two pit lane infringements.
Mari Boya pulled to one side to retire the following lap, triggering the fateful safety car which handed a cheap pit stop to Tsolov's peers, including title rival Camara.
One of his two noted infringements, cutting the white line at pit entry, was investigated and penalised. However, the Bulgarian was unable to serve his five-second time penalty having already retired. He will likely see that converted to a three-place grid drop for Feature Race 2, compounding his pain.
