The four-time world champion secured sprint pole by 0.071s over Lando Norris, while championship leader Oscar Piastri completed the top three.
Stake F1's Nico Hulkenberg delivered a sensational lap to complete the second row, with George Russell completing the top five.
Yuki Tsunoda will start the sprint from 18th after a mistake by Red Bull saw him fail to start a final lap due the timer having struck zero.
